Canada Committed to Resolution of Honduran Crisis
October 8, 2009
Canada’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Peter Kent headed to Honduras this week with a delegation from the Organization of American States (OAS). The mission hopes to achieve a peaceful solution to the dispute there. This is the second trip to Honduras for the minister, who serves as a steady representative of Canada’s resolve to peacefully and equitably settle this conflict.
As an OAS member, Canada serves as a productive part of this important regional meeting of the minds. Canada has reengaged the entire region; Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has shown a keen interest in finding common ground, seeking creative and mutually beneficial trade agreements.
Canada now carries a strong voice throughout the Western Hemisphere, spurring OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza to remark: “It is critically important for all of us that Canada has a constructive voice during our deliberations.”
The Canadian government will continue to speak clearly for democratic values and principles in Honduras and elsewhere in the Americas.
